It was real men and women who fought — and many died — for the freedoms we hold dear today. One of them was Walter Robert Boviall, who was killed in action on Dec. He served on the USS Arizona, and that is believed to be his final resting place. Boviall was born years ago in the same small town where I grew up — Delavan, Wisconsin. He was the son of Robert and Leanna Jones. He enlisted in the U.

Boviall was stationed at Pearl Harbor. We will never forget him or the others who died that day for our country 79 years ago. During that time, a blue star in the window meant that a family member was in the service. A gold star sadly was a sign of the ultimate sacrifice made by that family member for his or her country.

Beyond the honored dead, many other brave men and women fought during the Second World War. My great-uncle Warren Fitch was one of them.

He fought in the U. Army and received a Purple Heart. Uncle Warren and others in the Greatest Generation fought fascism, won the war, and then came back and built our country into the power that it is today.

Most, like Uncle Warren, did not brag about it or often even talk about it. They just did it. In contrast, U. Ocasio-Cortez is dead wrong.

The opposite is true. Prior to coronavirus, no generation in human history has ever experienced a world with more prosperity, more freedom, more leisure time, more access to information, higher literacy rates, better life expectancy, lower child mortality, less poverty, less disease, less hunger and less violent crime than her generation.

She should thank the members of the Greatest Generation for her good fortune. America again led the efforts to advance freedom and prosperity during the Cold War. Time and time again, American patriots have proven that protecting freedoms endowed by our Creator for individuals is superior to ceding unrestrained power over our lives to the government.

These battles continue today — not just with foreign adversaries — but with domestic foes as well. More than just resist, we must persist in our fight to protect freedom. Failure to protect our liberties will lead our beloved country down the wrong path. Venezuela and Cuba offer modern-day examples of the failures of socialism.

A year ago, 9 out of 10 Venezuelans lived in poverty in a country that was once one of the richest in the hemisphere. But that is not per hour, or even per day or week. This reality for those living under socialism is a warning of what a less-free America could become in the future.

Must never become a socialist country. Is there any wonder that more than 1 million people legally immigrate into the United States each year?

Sandi's newest TV venture is two-part Channel 4 documentary The Write Offswhich sees her help eight adults who struggle with reading and writing to master basic literacy, culminating in each of them reading a speech that they have written to their friends and family. In tonight's opening episode September 22Sandi met the group of learners for the first time.

The group included Craig, who said that he cannot read books to his young daughter and so makes up the stories, and young mum Emily, who revealed how much she struggles to read letters sent to her by her child's school.

The first challenge saw the group split into pairs and dropped off in the Peak District area. They then had to find their way to a restaurant where Sandi was waiting for them, using only their map and sign-reading skills to navigate the modes of transport available to them in order to make it to their destination.

Their next challenge was to write a shopping list, track down the ingredients in a large supermarket and then prepare a chicken pie using a written recipe. Despite some mishaps involving wrongly purchased or missing ingredients, all of the learners successfully made their pie.

Sandi welcomed her "very, very good friend" and former Bake Off colleague Prue Leith into the kitchen to taste the group's food and give her verdict — and she was very impressed by what she was eating, delighting the chefs. The episode ended with year-old Tommy, who had revealed earlier in the episode that it was his "dream" to be able to write a letter of thanks to the people who have supported him and to read it out to them, doing just that and addressing a room full of his friends with his own handwritten letter, announcing that "life couldn't get any better".

Viewers praised the programme for its sensitive approach to the issue of difficulties with literacy and host Sandi for her kindness and warmth while working with the participants:. Aww how cool is this challenge that sanditoksvig has taken on! And brave of these people to put themselves out there!

More From TV.A classic dystopian, science-fiction novel by English author Aldous Huxley, Brave New World has become a worldwide literary classic and a mainstay in high school English curriculums since its release. Its insidious and disturbing story introduces us to the futuristic World State, in which citizens are genetically modified, molded into a strict social hierarchy, brainwashed into loving their own servitude and forced into a doctored happiness that comes in the form of a government-issued drug.

Brave New World is stuffed with classic quotes and phrases that rear their heads in essays, papers and other literary works. Here are a few of our favorites. I want sin. John the Savage incites chaos when he throws out the soma, a government-sponsored drug, at a hospital.

And being contented has none of the glamour of a good fight against misfortune, none of the picturesqueness of a struggle with temptation, or a fatal overthrow by passion or doubt. Happiness is never grand. If you have behaved badly, repent, make what amends you can and address yourself to the task of behaving better next time. On no account brood over your wrongdoing. Rolling in the muck is not the best way of getting clean. Most men and women will grow up to love their servitude and will never dream of revolution.

In this exchange, people learn to love their servitude, choosing it over any dreams of revolution. It poisoned me; I was defiled. He feels the temptations of his primal urges and the superficial aspects of this society, and reflects on his shame at entering the carefully controlled chaos of this civilization, allowing it to poison and defile him.

Huxley once again harkens back to the idea of slaves loving their servitude. Religion is a central topic in Brave New World and Mond tells us that where religion failed, drugs and alcohol succeeded.

While religion did not give people the comfort they needed, drugs and alcohol fill in those gaps in this society. Alcohol, as well as a hefty array of hallucinogens, is used to weed out any bouts of dissatisfaction, creating a superficial, neverending happiness.

We did not make ourselves, we cannot be supreme over ourselves. We are not our own masters. Mond who gets all the good lines explains that we may think we love our freedom and independence, our ability to do things for ourselves and make our own choices.

Truth and beauty are dangerous distractions that run the risk of sowing the seeds of unhappiness.

Instead, universal, yet artificial happiness keeps society running at full efficiency. Disgusted by the artificial, mindless happiness he sees in the citizens of the World State, John defiantly utters this classic line. Science is dangerous, we have to keep it most carefully chained and muzzled. In our society, science and technology go hand-in-hand.

But in Brave New Worldthe two are disconnected as science is scorned as dangerous because it is purely an intellectual pursuit built on curiosity. In fact, it's the best my children have ever used and the most motivating by far.

Home Teachers. Lesson Hive Blog.It is a deeply patriotic and idealistic poem that expresses a soldier's love for his homeland—in this case England, which is portrayed as a kind of nurturing paradise.

Indeed, such is the soldier's bond with England that he feels his country to be both the origin of his existence and the place to which his consciousness will return when he dies. The poem was a hit with the public at the time, capturing the early enthusiasm for the war before the grim realities of longterm conflict made themselves known. That said, it undoubtedly captures and distills a particular type of patriotism. Select any word below to get its definition in the context of the poem.
